And here's my six paragraphs for this week:
"Look, if
you're not sure how you feel, why go ahead with it?" Sara wanted to hit
Jane, to shake her and tell her she didn't deserve Brian's love. "Wait,
like Mum asked. See what happens when the war's finally over."
Inside she
prayed Jane would heed her advice, and in her dreams saw Brian taking her away
from Dennis and fleeing with her and Rosy to some place far away where they
could be together.
"I do care
for him," Jane went on. "But I'm not sure if it's just
infatuation."
"Well, if
you don't know the difference, you shouldn't be going ahead with the wedding
plans," Sara snapped, sick to death of Jane's wavering.
"You're a
fine one to be giving me advice," Jane retorted.
Sara had to
agree with that. Her passivity when Dennis touched her these days seemed to
fuel his rage, and he was intent on exacting a cruel revenge for what she'd
done.

This book touched me deeply. Perhaps that's
because I was born in North London and the places and people were familiar. I
could not put it down. I can honestly say it is one of the best in the genre I
have read. By Violet 5 out of 5 stars

I loved this story, although there were times when I felt tears welling
in my eyes and an enormous lump in my throat. This story touched me
deeply, and I won't forget it. Watching a family struggle so desperately
is not easy, but seeing them triumph over tragedy is uplifting. I enjoy
long, intense family sagas like this. Tricia McGill writes so
realistically that the joys and sorrows portrayed made me laugh and cry.
This is a novel of great emotional depth. Kay James for Romance Reader
at Heart
If you think this is a predictable novel, however, you will miss not only a sweeping story of joy and sorrow, triumph and tragedy, but also an amazing overview of the century seen through a family saga. Tricia McGill takes a bold step into mainstream fiction with this book that flows like a gentle stream on the surface, but conceals a strong undercurrent and unexpected depths. Mary Allyce.
Miss McGill continues the tradition of Angela's Ashes with this intimate look of two generations facing the grim threat of war. It deals with the heartbreak of death and the recovery only love can bring. At moments it's tear jerking, but you won't want to stop until the last page, to learn how they juggle both the heartache and the romance. Ultimately, it offers the reader a strong lesson on never giving up. No matter how many troubles impact the reader's life, there's always a silver lining. If you like books like Angela's Ashes or sagas like Cold Mountain or Memories of a Geisha, this is the book for you. It'll hold your interest in a tight grasp, and not let go until the last page. I concur with the review snippets and your award. Your writing is awesome, and I always feel like part of the cast. :)
ReplyDeleteTricia, Your six paragraphs pulled me in. Can't wait to add it to my TBR list
ReplyDeleteYour six left me feeling OMG, what had Sara done?
ReplyDeleteWhatever had Sara done to deserve Dennis' rage and revenge? I want to know.
ReplyDeleteI connected with Sara immediately! I wanted to know more...
ReplyDeleteThank you all so much for your comments. Poor Sara was a victim of circumstance. It was so different for young women in those days. They don't realize how easy they have it today.
