Madeline (Maddie to her friends), an Australian history teacher, travels to York, England, to visit her friend Amber who is working there with a team of archaeologists unearthing Viking relics. They share a passion for the Viking Age, and both studied the Old Norse language.
About to take part in a re-enactment at the Viking village and wearing typical clothes worn by a Viking woman, they are swept back in time to the town of Jorvik, a thriving trading town, as York was in the year 879 AD. Maddie meets Norse trader Erik and is stunned by his uncanny resemblance to the Viking she has been dreaming of.
When Amber is kidnapped, Maddie persuades Erik to help her find her friend. Their journey takes them across to France and to Rouen, then further inland. They encounter misadventures on their perilous journey. Erik risks everything to aid Madeline in her quest. And the fear is always there; will she stay in the past to share her hero’s life, or be snatched back to her own time?

The jeweller was followed across the workroom by someone who was taller, and broader, than him. Maddie and Amber scuttled backwards to make room for the men. Both had to duck their heads to enter the small living room. The visitor appeared to be a giant.
As they entered, filling the small space with their size, Maddie felt her world spinning again. With a hand to her throat she let out a small shriek. The visitor was the man she’d never expected to see anywhere but in her dreams. Her Viking stood still as the curtain dropped behind him, a look of puzzlement on his face.
Maddie clutched at Amber’s arm, and her friend’s bewildered frown was the last thing she saw before everything went black and she felt herself falling.

“Wake up, Maddie.” Amber’s worried plea came to Maddie through a haze. Somewhere at the back of her consciousness she felt sure she’d heard that plea before.

Ah yes, she was dreaming again.

For some reason this thought brought comfort. Maddie blinked, and as she opened her eyes all comforting feelings fled. She wasn’t in Amber’s tiny flat. Wasn’t even in the twenty first century. Groaning, she sat up, her fingers sliding along the dirt floor. That was enough to remind her of their situation. The two Norsemen were staring at her as if she’d grown two heads.

“Did I faint?” she mumbled, and Amber nodded. She looked stunned and blatantly terrified. “Oh God, Amber, you know why, don’t you?”

“I have a pretty fair idea.” Amber’s voice quivered. “He looks like your dream hunk, doesn’t he?”

Maddie put a hand to her head and rose onto her knees. Amber helped her onto the bench. “I can’t take this in. What’s going on?” Maddie knew a touch of hysteria flavoured her question.

“Be blowed if I know.” Amber clutched at her elbows as she folded her arms across her chest.

Their jeweller friend offered Maddie a goblet, saying, “Drink this. And please speak in our tongue.” It was an order, for all he’d delivered it in a kindly tone. “I suppose all this has been overwhelming for you.”

That was an understatement if ever there was one.

“Yes. It’s not every day one gets taken up by the gods and tossed into an unknown place.” How she'd managed to get that out she didn't know. Her dream man was scowling at her and Amber as if they were freaks. She took a sip of the drink; it was some sort of wine, very sweet, but tasty.

“The gods?” the newcomer asked, his voice rumbling over Maddie like a well-remembered lullaby. But that was odd, for she couldn’t recall ever hearing him speak in her dreams.

“They say they come from a far place,” the jeweller said, shrugging. He pulled the necklaces from his pocket and held one in each palm, his thumbs brushing over the small droplets that caused all this trauma. Maddie cringed in horror, but nothing monumental happened. “They say Thor sent a storm raging overhead and as they both touched these talismans they were somehow transported here.” He gestured to the doorway. “Into my workshop, with copies of work I have only recently finished.”

His visitor looked skeptical. Who could blame him? “What nonsense. They are obviously thieves.”

Well, that was nice of him.

“I was totally caught up in this story. Time travel is such an unbelievable concept and I often have trouble following it in a story. I thought Tricia McGill wove a colorful tapestry of time travel. One that makes the reader believe it is possible. The characters are so realistic and have such depth to their character. I was drawn to them and wanted to find out if Maddie could ever find Amber and what she would choose to do about Erik.
The romance that blooms between Erik and Maddie is pure and sweet. When they finally made love, I wept with joy. I wasn’t sure if Maddie would stay with Erik or return home with Amber if they found her. The waiting almost did me in. I can’t tell you what happens, but I laughed and cried to the final page.
A masterfully woven tale that transcends the boundaries of time.

Sunday Snippet from The Laird--Wild Heather Book 1

Andrew, a wealthy Australian architect, takes life too seriously, whereas his PA Elizabeth is outgoing and fun-loving; a perfect foil for her somber boss. She is passionate about Celtic lore and language. With great reluctance Andrew answers a plea from his two elderly aunts to travel to Scotland before his uncle dies. He has no desire to visit the land his father left under a cloud many years ago, but Liz persuades him to take her along.

In the draughty and dilapidated castle, while exploring a disused attic, the pair set off a course of events that propel them back in time to 1050 where they meet Travis, coincidentally Andrew's double.

If they ever got back to their own time—no, when they got back—he'd have a hell of a job convincing his friends this had really happened. But perhaps it wasn't really happening. But it had to be; everything felt so real. He thumped a fist into a palm. Certainly he was solid, the floor beneath his feet real.

And Liz felt as soft and womanly as ever. The heathen was attracted to her, for sure. The great oaf wouldn't have any qualms about doing away with him that was another certainty. Andrew knew he must keep his head, if only for Liz's sake. What in God's name were they doing here? He couldn't make any sense of it. People just didn't travel through time. It was too preposterous for words.

If only his frail old Uncle Lawrence hadn't wished to see his last remaining male heir, they might still be at home. If only he hadn't let Liz persuade him to let her accompany him to Scotland.

It was her inquisitiveness that got them into this bloody mess. Andrew's mind strayed back to when he'd picked her up at the flat she shared with a monster of a cat. The moggy leapt onto him with a growl as she opened the door. Andrew grinned. Despite her admonishments the animal curled itself about his shoulders. He'd threatened to kill it one day. She merely laughed and took it off to the neighbor who had the unenviable task of cat-sitting.

Liz sent him to her bedroom to collect her luggage. Although he'd picked her up on a few occasions when she'd accompanied him on business dinners, he'd never been into her personal domain. It mirrored her personality to a tee. A complete contrast to his own bland serviced apartment a short distance away, her décor was a mish-mash of colors. Bright orange and green cushions were scattered on her large bed, which sported a tasseled bedspread and gold-knobbed headboard. A stuffed tiger sat in majestic dignity in the middle of the pillows.

How many men had shared that bed with her? Had the man in the photo on the bedside cabinet been one of them? Taken on her graduation day the photo showed her smiling into the eyes of a handsome man in his early forties. A smiling woman in a wheelchair sat between them.

“This is a remarkable book, and Ms. McGill is an outstanding writer. There is
rich historical detail of everyday medieval life, and characters who stepped
right out of the annuls of history. I love time travel books, and this one
is exceptional.” Deborah Brent for Romantic Times
