When Fate Decides—Challenge the Heart Book 1—Another Sunday Snippet

For too long Tessa has seen herself as plain and dowdy, just an ordinary suburban housewife. With her confidence eroded after being married to a bully who humiliated her at every opportunity, why wouldn’t she presume she was unattractive, and someone no man would find the least bit worth bothering with?

But now Tessa is a widow, and relishing her new state of independence. Her world is turned upside down by Jack Delaney, a man she spent hours fantasizing over when he worked for her husband. A man who gave her a deliciously secret outlet from her miserable marriage. When Jack enters her life again, professing he finds her attractive, why would she believe him? Especially as he is now wealthy, successful, still extremely handsome, and to add to that, years younger than her.

“All I’m doing, Tessa Browning, is being truthful. One thing you’ll find out about me is that I’m blunt, and as honest as a high court judge.” Jack stood, and moving to stand behind her placed his hands on her shoulders. A quiver ran through her, while his body shook with the restraint he was putting on it.

“Don’t,” she whispered, turning the tap off. As his fingers pressed onto her shoulders she hunched them slightly.

“Don’t what? Don’t warn you I’m to be trusted? Don’t touch you? Turn around, Tessa,” he asked softly. “I want you to look at me while I tell you something.”

She didn’t turn, and with gentleness, belying the flare of something animalistic roaring through him, Jack turned her, sliding his hands down until they rested lightly on her waist.

“I fancied you like crazy when I was a raw twenty year old, Tessa,” he said softly.

“No!” Her mouth parted. He almost groaned with his need to smother it with his own when her pink tongue darted out to moisten her lips.

“Why do you deny it? You must have seen how I looked at you. Des knew. The old bastard took delight in taunting me.”

Had he ever? And warned him off on one occasion. “Touch my wife,” he’d said savagely. “And, let me tell you fella, you’ll not get a job in this trade in the next thirty years.” And he had been capable of following through on the threat. But this hadn’t been the reason Jack didn’t try to seduce her. His honor wouldn’t let him touch another man’s wife. It was one of the rules his father instilled in him. And there was also the added moralistic dilemma of a wife of his own—albeit one he didn’t love.

Her head was going from side to side—her lips still parted. “Yes. Anyway, Des is gone. I don’t know how deep your grief is, Tessa, but I have to warn you about this. As soon as you feel you’re ready, I’m going after you. I’m not twenty anymore; I’m a mature man with all the usual needs. It’s no good looking at me as if I’m stark raving mad. I never did anything about it while you were a married woman, but now you’re as free as me and I’m going to make you want me as much as I want you.”

“You are mad,” she spluttered, pushing at his arms as they tightened about her waist until their bodies met. The spiral of need shooting through him sent messages through to his soul.

“Mad about you.” She plucked at his sleeves as his lips hovered above hers.

“Don’t be daft!” With a kind of frantic appeal, she tilted her head to put more space between their mouths. “I’d have to be at least fifteen years older than you. I have grown up children. My hair has gray in it, and you are good looking enough to get anyone you want.” In agitation she pushed at his forearms. Every muscle tensed at the feel of her hands on him, burning through the fabric of his sleeves.

Jack grinned. “I’m glad you think I’m good looking. We’ve made a start. It would be awful if you reckoned I was as ugly as an old boot.”

“Stop it. This is no joking matter, Jack, and take your hands off me!” She struggled to get free, slapping where she had just gripped his arms. But Jack held fast. He’d seen the telltale signs of her arousal through the soft fabric of her sweater, and wasn’t about to lose any advantage.

“Okay, I’ll take my hands off you if you tell me bluntly you haven’t the slightest desire to taste me. If you tell me you aren’t in the least bit aroused by having my body this close to yours. If you admit knowing I’ve never been as hot and hard in my life from holding a woman as I am right now doesn’t turn you on, I’ll release you.”

Her head went back further, showing him the perfect arch of her throat, the shadowed valley between her breasts, and Jack groaned. It sounded loud in the short silence after his announcement.

“I have no desire to... to... taste you,” she said through her teeth.

“Liar!” Gently he shook her. “Come now, Tessa, I’ve been honest with you. Isn’t it about time you were honest with yourself?”

“Is she as beautiful as her mother?” Damn! Now she’d gone all wary again, but her blush told him his revelation pleased her.

Laughing nervously she eyed him across the small space separating them. “Don’t be daft.”

“Daft to think anyone could be as lovely as you, you mean?” With a grin, he watched the peachy stain travel from her throat and up her face. God, she was endearing.

She gave a soft snort as she held a spoon aloft. “You should see about getting glasses.”

“My eyesight is perfect.” Fascinated, he watched her movements. Yes, she was flustered for sure. “Surely Des told you how lovely you are. And there must have been many men over the years that commented on it. Unless they are the ones who needed glasses.”

She emptied a packet of spaghetti into boiling water as she protested, “I’m a past her prime mum and my hair’s going gray.”

Jack made a rude sound. “Rubbish! Past your prime? You have the face and figure of a twenty-year-old, Tessa. Your skin’s like silk, and I happen to like the touch of silver in your hair.” Would dearly like to see if her skin felt as soft as it promised to be. Itched to run his fingers through that sleek hair.

“How did we get onto this subject?” He couldn’t quite make out if she was embarrassed by his bluntness or pleased at his compliments.

“Well, mainly because I was commenting on your beauty and you were arguing with me.” Now he knew she was pleased with his observations—her flustered movements gave her away. Obviously he was right—she just wasn’t used to having someone tell her she was lovely. “How do you keep so slim?”

“I walk the dog every day as well as doing exercises. And I do Tai Chi regularly.”

“Really? I’ve always wanted to have a go at that? Where did you learn?” He watched as she stirred the pot. A delicious smell rose from the sauce she’d poured in.

Her eyes went wide. “I went to the local community center. You’re kidding me, right? I can’t see you doing anything so sedate.” A small sound of disbelief left her lips. “I would reckon karate would be more in your line.”

“Funny you should say that.” Jack nodded. “I did start learning after my marriage flopped. It was one way to get the anger out of my system.”

“Anger?” She stopped stirring to frown at him.

“Yes. Mary was a bitch of the first degree.” Another understatement. Bitch came nowhere near describing his ex-wife’s selfishness. “I spent the first year after our split wondering where I went wrong. Until it dawned on me I had nothing to do with the way she was.” For a moment he stared pensively down at the dog now snuggled in her basket. “I came from Adelaide. I don’t know if I told you.”

“Yes, you said your mum and dad lived there. Your father was a plumber, wasn’t he?”
“That’s right.” Jack was astounded she’d remembered so much of what he told her so long ago. “They both died within a couple of years of each other. Dad first, then Mum three years ago.”

“Oh, I am sorry.” She put placemats, condiments and cutlery on the table.

Jack shrugged. “Don’t be. Mum didn’t have much interest in life once dad had gone.”

Her eyes turned wistful again. “It must be lovely to care so deeply for someone that you can’t bear life without each other.” As if realizing she’d disclosed too much, she turned her back on him and began to take dishes from the cupboard. “So, you came over from Adelaide and met your wife.”

Even in the prospering colony of New South Wales, it would be far-fetched to think a convicted man could consider marrying the daughter of a wealthy property owner.

But Remy has larger problems to contend with than Sara’s bigoted father. Forced to leave the woman he loves behind, Remy faces overwhelming odds and an ordeal that threatens to strip him of everything; his pride, his strength, his health—even his life.

Sara has many struggles of her own and when Remy finally thinks he has a future with Sara within his grasp, he is sent to a place where pain and suffering are everyday occurrences. Will the lovers ever find true happiness?

*~~~~~~~~~~~*
And here's my snippet. Remy and Sara's first meeting:

“I don’t know which is worse, to be candid. I wished we’d never come out to this country of savages, but my father was convinced a fortune was waiting to be made.” She flicked a glance at her father, now boring Tiger with a discourse on trading practices. Tiger’s expression clearly showed his indifference to her father’s monologue.

“And has he made his fortune yet?” Rem didn’t take his eyes from her face. Every move she made entranced him more and more. He couldn’t give a brass farthing for her father’s possessions, but anything that got her talking was worth the effort.

“He’s wealthy, if that’s what you mean. My mother and I are allowed to purchase whatever we need to make us presentable in society.”

“Society?” Rem laughed, glancing about. “Hardly that out here.”

She picked sparingly at the food set before her. “You’re right. We could all walk around in plain clothes and not give a fig for our appearance, and who would know or care? It really is a land of savages.” The poignancy of her quiet statement struck him in the heart.

“I would care.” Rem stared at her hard, and thought, such a hothouse plant should be pampered and spoiled, brought up amongst the society in London, not dragged to a godforsaken place like this. “Never change, sweet Sara. Always stay as beautiful and elegantly attired as you are now, no matter the cost or effort. Promise me.”

“All right. I will promise you that.” Her small laugh made his gut wrench. “Will you show me around the property?” she asked, glancing down the table.

The meal was almost at an end, and the others were still engrossed in a debate on the merits of sheep farming versus trading; Tiger enthusing about the price of fleece on the English market.

She had a way of fluttering her eyelashes that sent Rem’s heart into a spin. Trying not to show his eagerness, and thus appearing like a smitten schoolboy, Rem rose slowly, bowing over her hand. “I would be honored.” He pressed a kiss on her knuckle and was pleased to see her soft cheeks turn delightfully pink.

“Where are you off to?” Edmund bellowed, interrupting their discussion, as she settled her skirts about her with a pat of the hand.

Rem held his breath, expecting her father’s annoyance to deter her, but then she said sweetly, “Rem is going to show me around, Papa,” and gave Edmund a peck on his florid cheek. She smiled demurely at Bella. “And I need to walk after such a splendid meal. Thank you, Mrs. Carstairs. It was most enjoyable. But I shouldn’t have eaten so much.”

“Please call me Bella,” Bella insisted, waving them on their way. “Go on with you, and enjoy your stroll.” Rem grinned at Bella’s meaningful look. A look that clearly stated he was to watch his step with this beauty, or bear the wrath of her father.

Rem knew Greenwood wouldn’t make a scene in front of Bella and Tiger and smiled to himself. “Come, I’ll show you the orchard Tiger planted soon after they arrived here.” Offering his arm, he inhaled her fragrance as she hooked her hand in his elbow.

When they were out of earshot of the others, he said softly, “You smell as sweet as a garden full of blooms.” She tapped him on the chest with her fan and smiled, showing dear little dimples in her cheeks. “Hmm.” With a chuckle, she wrinkled her nose pertly. “I’m surprised I don’t stink like one of the horses, considering our mode of transport.”

“There’s no decent lanes or carriage ways yet. It’s difficult for you to be jolted over the stubble in your wagon. Tiger’s working hard at improving that. Soon there’ll be a passable road connecting the properties on this side of the river. You should have seen it last year when I arrived.”

“The author has delivered an accurate and compelling story of a convict's life, touching on those of gold miners and the growing town of Sydney. The evocative writing and the increasingly dire straits that Remy and Sara find themselves in, make for an excellent read." Leanne Shawler for eBook Reviews Weekly

Terrified, and in fear for her life after her husband, an undercover cop, is killed, Melanie Ross has nowhere to hide.

A squadron from a far planet visiting Earth on a reconnaissance survey prepares to leave, without one of their members who is dying of a virus. Irena must remain on Earth, so seeks a replacement to take her craft back to the other side of the Universe. Seeing Melanie’s predicament she offers her an escape. Reluctantly Melanie agrees. Conquering her fears, she must learn to live among a superior race on Qindaga.

Reve, commander of the star ship circling their planet, bears an inexplicable resemblance to her dead husband. Passion flares amid the stars, but can love with an alien flourish?

“You would run away from us so soon?” The bland question came out smoothly. He had been acting reasonably well, so why was she so scared?

“It’s not a case of running away. I belong on Earth.” Was she a prisoner here? Yes, for as long as this man decided to keep her on his planet. The saliva in her mouth dried up and her stomach felt as if it had become knotted.

“As I see it you have little to go back for,” he went on as if she hadn’t spoken. “Your life mate is dead. You were being threatened with your life, were in fact a moment away from being murdered by this…mobster. You have no other people of your own family.” He got up, put the tray containing her empty dish and glass on the bench and waved his palm over a red light in the wall. The lot disappeared.

“This is all true.” Melanie pushed her hair back and glanced at him where he stood, long legs astride, hands on hips. Totally at ease and arrogantly sure of himself. “But Irena promised you would take me back if I should want that.”

“That’s true also.”

Melanie nibbled on her lower lip when he stared at her in that strange way that sent odd alarm bells off inside her. It looked as if he wasn’t going to say any more on that subject. “What else did she say in her message?” she asked, for something to break the tension strumming between them.

“That you would make an excellent replacement for her in all ways.” Turning his back on her he began to press buttons on a keyboard.

“Replacement?” Melanie gulped—her shoulders going back as she stared at him. What exactly did he have in mind by that statement? Her throat went as dry as a desert while she continued to gaze at the wide expanse of his back.

"Tricia McGill delivers a good, solid romance with endearing aliens and a slight tinge of suspense. This is a charming futuristic by a fan favourite."
